The best backend engineering hire is not always the biggest agency or marketplace. For startups, the right choice depends on ownership, architecture judgment, production proof, and how clearly the engineer can reduce backend risk.

Start with the backend problem, not the hiring channel

The better question is what kind of backend risk you need reduced.
